REI's approach: The process is designed to help leaders and organizations who want to proactively understand and address racism, both in their organization and in the community where the organization is working. Our experience is that the goals of understanding and addressing racism can rarely be achieved in a three-hour or one-day workshop. Racism is a fierce, ever-present, challenging force, one which has structured the thinking, behavior, and actions of individuals and institutions since the beginning of U.S. history. To understand racism and effectively begin dismantling it requires an equally fierce, consistent, and committed effort.

Phase 1 Workshop Schedule - 2024
REI’s two-day Phase 1 training is designed to develop the capacity of participants to better understand racism in its institutional and structural forms. Moving away from a focus on personal bigotry and bias, this workshop presents a historical, cultural, and structural analysis of racism.

Groundwater Basics Workshop Schedule - 2024
REI organizers will use stories and data to present a perspective that racism is fundamentally structural in nature. By examining characteristics of modern-day racial inequity, the presentation introduces participants to an analysis that most find immediately helpful and relevant. The Groundwater metaphor is designed to help practitioners at all levels internalize the reality that we live in a racially structured society, and that that is what causes racial inequity.
Workshop Debrief Session Schedule - 2024
Debriefing sessions are for people who have experienced Phase 1 training. Participants will review the concepts taught in Phase I and study them and their connection to each other more deeply. The lessons of each piece will be explored in relationship to REI’s analysis of structural racism.
Latinx Challenges Workshop Schedule - 2024
Latino Challenges is a two-day workshop for people who live in or work with Latino communities and are interested in ending racial disparities in our institutions and working together for social justice.
Alumni Information
Individuals who have completed Phase 1 workshops may have the opportunity to attend future Phase 1 sessions as an alumni. Alumni session are complimentary, but have participation restrictions. Please email Abby for more details if you are interested in attending a session as an alum prior to registering.
