Organization Overview
Healing Ribbons was founded in response to the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought significant loss to our community, including cherished loved ones and culture bearers. This grief was compounded by the traumatic discovery of mass graves at former boarding school sites, reopening deep-seated wounds for many families still grappling with lingering trauma. Our organization emerged as a beacon of hope, providing essential services that foster healing, cultural identity, and personal empowerment.
We primarily serve intergenerational Indigenous matriarchs and their families in the greater Omaha area. Our focus is intergenerational and family-centric, recognizing the traditional roles these women played as culture keepers, educators, and leaders within their communities. Historically, Indigenous matriarchs were the guardians of cultural knowledge, language, rituals, and practices, ensuring their transmission across generations. This role is not merely symbolic; it is essential for the continuity of cultural identity, values, and social cohesion.
Healing Ribbons caters to a broad inter-tribal community, filling gaps for urban Natives overlooked by tribal-specific or reservation-based services. We engage all age groups, focusing on the greater Omaha area and reaching out to nearby communities.
