Organization Overview
The mission of the Great Plains Theatre Commons (GPTC) is to strengthen community by supporting the creation and sharing of diverse new stories. GPTC began in 2006 as the Great Plains Theatre Conference of Metropolitan Community College. Originally an annual week-long event that launched or advanced the careers of countless playwrights, GPTC has evolved into an independent nonprofit dedicated to amplifying and elevating diverse local voices while serving as an important incubator of new plays that consistently have a profound impact on the national theatre landscape. GPTC operates from a home office at Yates Illuminates Community Center in the Gifford Park neighborhood.
The work of GPTC can be categorized into three programming streams: the annual New Play Festival that has supported the development of over 700 new scripts since 2006; the Commons Season of free regional and world premieres; and Community Programs that inspire and support local emerging artists and community members to share their stories. Through this three-pronged approach, GPTC plays a vital role in empowering underrepresented local voices while providing an extraordinary scope of resources to support the development of new plays by both emerging and established playwrights.
