Nonprofit Association of the Midlands has been closely monitoring the recent developments with COVID-19, commonly known as coronavirus.  Our commitment to the health and safety of our community is our highest priority, so we have made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel our inaugural Mobilize conference, scheduled for March 26th at the Omaha Design Center.  We feel a responsibility to prevent any unnecessary spread of COVID-19 in the Omaha area and want to cancel as soon as possible to minimize any inconvenience.

Our Keynote

Precious Brady-Davis

Precious is a true renaissance woman for the ages; As a native Nebraskan she has never lost her Midwestern charm. Lauded internationally as an award winning diversity advocate, communications professional and public speaker she currently serves as the Regional Communications Manager for the Central Region of the Beyond Coal Campaign at Sierra Club. 

With over 15 years of experience in nonprofit administration, leadership development, and public relations Precious is a dynamic speaker and panelist who has been featured at: University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Reed College, University of Michigan, The Chicago Community Trust, Hampshire College, James Madison University, and the University of Cambridge. 

Davis finds deep meaning in finding the root of what proliferates bias, bigotry, and prejudice in our world. Through celebrating the beauty of coexistence, uplifting and centering the stories of those who are most marginalized, and seeing that all issues that damn the human condition are interconnected she invites all who come in contact with her to see the resilience that lives within us all.

She previously served for 3 years as the Assistant Director of Diversity Recruitment Initiatives at Columbia College Chicago, her alma mater from which she received a BA in Liberal Arts. Precious implemented the campus wide diversity initiative and under her tenure provided leadership and oversight of national diversity recruitment and strategic inclusion policy initiatives. 

Precious also served for 3 years as the Youth Outreach Coordinator at largest LGBT community center in the Midwest: Center on Halsted. Under Precious' tenure she launched and coordinated a 1.6 million dollar CDC HIV prevention grant which provided outreach, education, youth programming and testing services to over 3000 young African American and Latino gay, bi, and trans youth between the ages of 13 and 24.

Precious is married to Myles Brady and is a resident of Hyde Park on the South Side of Chicago.

Being Invisible is Not an Option. Presenter: Ralph Kellogg

Ralph will lead a discussion about two situations he faced in his career: first, he was outed by his manager which derailed his career, and second, when he had to out himself at work because of an award I received. Both of these situations left him scared. Because we live in Nebraska, and because Omaha is an insular community, he recognized that I could be fired and there would be no laws to protect him. He will share how he coped in these situations, where he found support, and what he did to own his narrative.

 

Breaking the Binary. Presenters: Maris Kingfisher, Rachel Kingfisher

The gender binary is defined as "the classification of gender into two distinct, opposite, and disconnected forms of masculine and feminine, whether by social system or cultural belief." In this session we will discuss the effects of the gender binary in the workplace and how we can transform our environments to be more welcoming and affirming.

 

10:30am - 11:30am: Morning Breakout Sessions (B)

LGBTQIA2S+ in the Workplace: Proactive Resolutions Irrespective of Ongoing Legality Disputes.  Presenter: Jill Thomsen

The workshop starts with two stories: (1) employer’s failed attempt to resolve LGBTQIA2S+ harassment until police, attorneys, government, and media were called; and (2) employer’s proactive attempt to support employee through gender reassignment, resulting in a win-win for all. 

Attendees will then learn the state of the law governing LGBTQIA2S+ in the U.S. workplace; volunteer to share their own or a loved one's stories of discrimination; and finally, discuss as a group any specific actions that can be taken proactivelyto produce a win-win for both employee and employer irrespective of legality issues.

Whether attendees are personally experiencing LGBTQIA2S+ discrimination, know someone who is, or interested in implementing workplace programs to ensure employees' discrimination concerns can be voiced and resolved effectively, attendees will leave with an action plan focused on: (1) resolution with the employer in a proactive, collaborative manner; but if those attempts fail, (2) resolution by external support from employee relations experts, mediators, attorneys, the government, and the media.

 

Youth Voice. Presenter: Sam Carwyn

This session will provide an opportunity for attendees to review how they partner with youth. Evaluate the way youth's needs are prioritized in their settings. Attendees will learn about different identities under the umbrella of the queer community and explore how different identities should be supported. Attendees will recognize what needs to be done to prepare to support intersectional youth before a need arises.

1:15pm - 2:15pm: Afternoon Breakout Sessions (C)

Queers with Disabilities in Nonprofits to Educate the Able-Bodied and Able-Minded. Presenters: Alex Theos, Anne Heimann

Nonprofit professionals will learn tips that will help them be inclusive to queer disabled people, from the presenter’s experiences as a disabled person with many mental disabilities and a physical disability as well. The audience will learn how to be more accessible for queer and disabled applicants, how to spot when to help or how to help someone who is disabled and is struggling, how to address queer and disabled individuals, and how to make a workspace equitable for someone who is queer and disabled, all coming from only one persons experience (and some stories from others that freely are shared).

 

Serving the LGBTQIA2S+ Community. Presenter: Andrew Aleman

How can you be certain the services you provide are affirming and accessible? In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how to make sure your programs and services go beyond just ‘talking the talk’ of inclusion to be truly welcoming to people in the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Queer Space in the Workplace. Presenter: Kelly Garcia

This engaging presentation will help those involved better identify non-affirming content within their own organizations. From paperwork, signage, culture, trainings, and beyond, this presentation will address the issues I ran into while creating an affirming environment in our clinic space. With a brief terminology 101 and differentiation between gender nonconforming and transgender, as well as some general terms, we will make sure you are better equipped to transform your work environment to be safe, affirming and comfortable for everyone.

 

Get to know our LGBTQIA Community Leaders: How to Spark Conversations for Change and Uplifting Their Voices. Moderator: Dulce Sherman. Panelists: Esther Mejia, Eli Rigatuso, Lexy Stubblefield

Have you ever wondered why we don't know more about people we perceive as different? If you are leader in an organization, would you pull up a chair and have coffee with a member from the LGBTQIA community? Are you afraid you will say something wrong? Don't have the time. Well make time because your conversation could serve to help us all understand their perspective and create change and lift others from the community. We believe part of the problem today is that we don't make the time to understand someone else's story or that there is fear in losing power. In this moderated panel discussion, we will discuss the experience as a family member, open it up to discuss the experiences of the panelist's perspective of being Lesbian, a business owner, Female, LatinX, a Two Spirit vs. Non-binary, Native American and business owner, and Trans gender Female, being African American working for a prison abolitionist nonprofit supporting LGBTQ and HIV-positive prisoners . Listen to their experiences, challenges they have overcome, what they have done to influence change, and share a key takeaway on what they encourage Leaders to implement immediately.

Your Presenters

 

Andrew Aleman, PLCSW (He|Him|His), is a Clinical Social Worker and Independent Consultant, and from Omaha, NE. Mr. Aleman’s work is always based in dismantling systems of power and uplifting those who are oppressed. His professional experiences include: Supporting LGBTQ+ youth and young adults as a mental health therapist, advocating for and educating about services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, supervision, Title IX investigation, statewide domestic violence & sexual violence training, as well as community based sexual health education and advocacy. In response to his community-based work, Mr. Aleman was honored with the 2018 Heartland Pride Brad Fuglei Impact Award, and presented with a 2019 Young, Black, and Influential Award for Advocacy.

Currently, Mr. Aleman works as an Independent Consulting working with several Nebraska based organizations to ensure service deliver is inclusive, equitable, and meets best practices. He consults with organizations whom directly address injustices impacting the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals, youth involved with the juvenile justice system, and Black women and girls. Mr. Aleman is also a Visiting Instructor in the Grace Abbot School of Social Work (GASSW) at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). To ensure his work is always connected to community efforts, Mr. Aleman serves on multiple boards and committees. He is currently the Co-Chair for the GLSEN Omaha Board of Directors, a member of the policy committee for ACLU Nebraska, and was recently invited to join the board of the SIECUS.

 

Sam Carwyn (She/Her/Hers) is dedicated to her community having spent her professional career in the non-profit sector. Sam earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Child, Youth, and Family Studies. She addressed abuse and neglect then shifted to mental health and behavioral health concerns. She provides and promoted education to support the most marginalized. She completed the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the College of Saint Mary. She is pursuing a Master in Divinity with Social Transformation as her concentration area at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.

 

Kelly Garcia (She/Her/ or They/Them) is the Patient Care Coordinator at Affiliated Reproductive Health Clinics (ARHC), a new non-profit LGBTQ+ clinic in the Omaha area. She is actively working to develop and propel the program to serve a community that has been historically underserved. With six plus years of healthcare experience and one year of advocacy focused work, Kelly is committed to the intersections of medical care and trauma informed practices. When she is not pushing for bodily autonomy, she is cuddling her dog or congregating at your local queer space for karaoke.

 

Anne Heimann (She/Her/Hers) has a Masters in Educational Leadership and is currently a High School Special Education Teacher and Department Head. Anne is an Executive Board Member for GLSEN Omaha. Previously, Anne was the Director of the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Accessibility Services Center providing accommodations to college students within an academic and student employment capacity. 

 

Ralph Kellogg (He/Him/His) serves as the Human Resources Director for Nebraska Appleseed. Nebraska Appleseed is a nonprofit organization focused on advancing the rights of children, immigrants, the LGBTQIA community. Prior to working at Nebraska Appleseed, Mr. Kellogg worked at Centris Federal Credit Union where he led all aspects of the human resources function. Mr. Kellogg has over twenty years of experience in banking, customer service, sales, and non-profit arenas. Mr. Kellogg has an extensive background in strategic planning, training, corporate communications, and human resources, to include the areas of employee relations and labor union management. Mr. Kellogg received a B.S. in Business Administration from Creighton University in 1992. He obtained an MBA from Bellevue University in 2002, and an M.S. in Negotiation and Dispute Resolution from Creighton University in 2009. In 2012 Mr. Kellogg received a B.S. in Human Resources Management from Bellevue University earning cum-lade designation. Mr. Kellogg holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designation from the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI), as well as the Senior Certified Professional (SCP) in Human Resources from the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM). Kellogg also has the Professional in Project Management (PMP) credential from the Project Management Institute. Mr. Kellogg has also earned professional certifications from Cornell University in the areas of Employee Relations and Strategic Human Resources Management. Kellogg also works as an Adjunct Instructor at Bellevue University where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Human Resources. Kellogg is also a member of the Forbes Human Resources Council and has had several articles published on the Forbes HR Council website about various employee relations topics such as managing anxiety and depression in the workplace, and managing toxic work relationships and environments. Kellogg is active with the Human Resource Association of the Midlands (HRAM), and teaches strategic management to PHR and SPHR candidates. Mr. Kellogg serves on the BOD of the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands (NAM), is the Chairperson for Communities, serves on the Nebraska ACLU Board, and was recently selected to serve on the CASA of Douglas County Board.

 

Maris Kingfisher (She/Her/Hers) is a passionate advocate with over a decade of experience working in the Human Services industry. Knowing that the average American will spend 90,000 hours of their lifetime at work, she is extremely passionate about making workspaces more inclusive for everyone. Maris’ perspective on diversity, equity and inclusion is intersectional and informed by her lived experience as an avid traveler and a Queer Filipino-American. 


Rachel Kingfisher 
(She/Her/Hers) is an ardent social justice activist.  With 10+ years of experience in activism and advocacy centered in uplifting the homeless community, her work is informed by equity and justice and the idea that all people should be empowered in their self-sufficiency and set up to thrive in this world.  A native of Virginia Beach, Rachel loves to travel, a practice which expands her understanding of the world and thus of her work.  Rachel one day aspires to bring home the cutest Corgi puppy.


Esther Mejia (She/Her/Hers) is the founder and creative director of E Creative, an award-winning brand strategy and design firm. As a brand and marketing communications expert, Esther pursues her true purpose in life – to do work that aligns with her values of community and empowerment. Through her business, she focuses on working with clients who enrich lives and elevate our community with her passion for developing brands and communications that are meaningful and genuinely reflect her clients and their purpose.

 
As an entrepreneur, Latina and out member of the LGBTQIA+ community, she focuses much of her philanthropic efforts in organizations that serve immigrants, women, girls and LGBTQIA+ individuals. By supporting these priority populations, she gives back to the communities she identifies with most. Esther currently serves as a board member for the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Center for Advancement and Immigrant Legal Center. She is the Chair-elect for the Equality Fund and serves on the Advisory Board for the Latino Center of the Midlands. Esther has been recognized as a Tribute To Women honoree by the WCA and Small Business of the Month by the Greater Omaha Chamber.

 

Eli Rigatuso (He/Him/His) is an Omaha, Nebraska native who identifies as a queer transmasculine Two Spirit of the Menominee Nation. An artist, photographer, and video producer/director, Rigatuso has more than 30 years of experience in his field. He has owned and operated Catch Creative a video production company since 1995 and has work experience in television, radio, and digital media as well as sales and management. Mr. Rigatuso is a social media expert and has experience as on-air talent using his voice to help move the needle toward more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA2S+ people! Rigatuso also created Speaking of Happy where he shares the stories of local LGBTQIA2S+ people through live-stream events!

An outspoken Equal Rights Activist who has served his community in a variety of ways since the mid 90’s.Rigatuso was instrumental in raising funds for the Campaign against 416 in early 2000 and helped found as well as served on the board of Heartland Pride.  He is certified to train the Teaching Transgender Toolkit and frequently conducts workshops creating an affirming space for folks to come with questions about what it means to be transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming.

 

Dulce Sherman (She/Her/Hers) is a first generation LatinX whose immigrant parents taught her the importance of preserving cultural identity and empowering others. As a daughter of a minister in Central Nebraska, Dulce has served others in the community. Despite being raised in poverty, she graduated high school and worked three jobs in college. Dulce has a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, a master’s degree in Management and an Organizational Development Graduate-level certificate from the Fielding Graduate Institute. Dulce has 25 years of Human Resources Leadership experience. She is currently a leader for, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and owner, Sherman Executive Consulting offering Human Resources & Operations consulting for Nonprofit and Small businesses. She serves on several boards, LeadDIVERSITY fellow, current NEI program participant, and has facilitated for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, Inclusive Communities, and the NE Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She also co-led the LGBTQIA committee at a Federally Qualified Health Center where the policies and medical insurance plans were re-written to be LGBTQIA inclusive and help launch the first Spanish PFLAG group.

 

Alexandria Stubblefield:(She/Her/Hers) Alexandria aka Lexy is a woman of many gifts, employed full time at First National Bank as a Customer Care Senior Specialist and part time as volunteer coordinator with Black and Pink she is committed to seeing folks who have experienced incarceration be treated with dignity and respect. As a black transgender woman she has face many challenges with different work environments and because of this she supports other black transgender women who have to engage in sex work to create lives for themselves. She considers herself fortunate and hopes to inspire LGBTQ+ youth with her story!

 

Alex Theos (They/Them) is a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. They have received an A.A. in Education: K-12, an A.A. in Psychology at Iowa Western, and are currently pursuing a Bachelors's degree in Secondary Education English with a Minor in English at UNO.  They were one of eleven committee members that hosted the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference in 2018 on UNO's campus and were on the Queer and Trans Services Committee on campus in 2019. In 2020, they are on the Network for Disability Awareness and Advocacy Committee on campus as well. 

They have a specific passion for and breadth of knowledge about LGBTQ+ topics, particularly in the field of Education, Invisible Disability Advocacy, Life Hacks, Non-Profits, Mental Wellness, and Educating Teachers about LGBTQIA+ (but specifically Trans) Rights. You can frequently find them discovering information on new topics such as volunteering, playing games of many varieties, expanding his knowledge of crafting, creating baked goods or food concoctions, and exploring new genres of fiction. They are also an animal lover with two guinea pigs named Bae and Bee.


Jill Thomsen is founder and principal of Equal Opps Consulting, where she promotes pathways to in-demand and sustainable careers for diverse populations. As an employment attorney, employee relations counselor, mediator, and social worker, she specializes in equal opportunity, affirmative action, and dispute resolution, experience gained from her previous roles in private practice, Fortune 500 companies, and national nonprofit organizations. Jill’s background in developing strategic, results-focused, and collaborative practices serving diverse communities has led to invitations to address audiences at the U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Office of Management and Budget, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U.S. Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, Association of Corporate Counsel, Center for Workplace Compliance, Engineering News Record, American Association of Railroads, Workforce Diversity magazine, The New York Times, the Nebraska Law Review, and the National Association of Counsel for Children Law Manual. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law, and her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Social Work degrees from Boston College.
