Metro Reading Council is an arm of the International Literacy Association and the Nebraska State Literacy Association. Metro has been around for over 50 years and for much of that time served as the major provider of professional development for educators in our six county metro area. With the change in how school districts deliver professional development to their teachers, we have needed to change our focus. Our major project is our Metro Reading Council Writing Contest which is open to all students in our six county area, Grades K-12, in any private, parochial or public school. The writing contest culminates each year with a community celebration at which all participants are recognized along with the winners. An author also does a presentation at this celebration open to the all participants, their families, educators and the entire community, Our community outreach project is a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. When a home is dedicated, one of our members presents a bag of books for the children in the family. We are able to tailor the books to the ages and genders of the household children. It is a joyous event and when the children also receive a gift, it is awesome to see their excitement as they examine their new books!
