More Information
Our Vision:
Feed the hungry by rescuing the heartland’s bounty that would otherwise go to waste.

Our Mission:
Connect perishable food from local food purveyors to local nonprofits that feed our hungry, raising awareness and educating the community on food waste and hunger.

The Need:
Saving Grace will benefit the Greater Omaha Area by providing the first professionally coordinated perishable food rescue and delivery, thereby filling a niche not served in our community. We are collaborating with local community groups to relieve the increasingly staggering rate of food insecurity.

Food insecurity, defined as having regular eating habits interrupted by a lack of food or being unsure where the next meal is coming from, is a major problem afflicting Nebraska. In a 2011 Nielsen study , it was discovered that the child hunger rate was 20.6% in Douglas County. Approximately 20% of children in Nebraska and western Iowa are considered at-risk for hunger, including close to 25,000 in Douglas County alone. Overall in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie Counties, the food insecurity rate is 14.3%.

Americans throw away over 100 billion pounds of food each year, according to the EPA, and less than 3% of this waste is recovered/rescued nationwide. Restaurants, cafeterias, grocery stores, and other food retail entities account for roughly 60% of all food waste in America. Saving Grace will rescue as much of Omaha’s edible and nutritious food waste as possible and distribute it to nonprofit organizations that feed the hungry.
