Functional expense accounting is one of the fundamental tools of internal management and external accountability reporting. It is a method of accounting based on the organization’s primary activities:  a) program or mission-based services, b) general and administrative and c) fund raising.  
Sound functional expense practices produce information that managers, donors, clients, and other stakeholders use to gauge the relative effectiveness of the organization in fulfilling their mission.

  • Accounting cycles
  • Accounting roles within an organization
  • Record keeping
  • Accounting systems:  cash, accrual, modified
  • Classifying capital expenditures
