Healthy Children Learn Best

Building Healthy Futures (BHF) is a nonprofit that aims to improve health for the community’s underserved children and youth through thoughtful collaboration and advocacy. To that end, Building Healthy Future’s role in the community has been to bridge the institutions of health and education – the two institutions with the largest impact on child well-being. Since our inception, we have worked with the Omaha Public Schools and four major health systems in Douglas County to provide health care. Of the children served by our program partners in the areas of primary care, oral health care, mental health care:

  • Approximately 60% of children are enrolled in Medicaid or SCHIP and 30% are uninsured.
  • Schools benefiting from services provided through our collaborative efforts have an average Free & Reduced Lunch rate (FRL) of 90.5% and an average English Language Learner rate of 30.9%; both populations were experiencing disproportionate access to health care within the community prior to implementation of services provided by our collaborative partners.

Building Healthy Futures works to improve health outcomes by 1) building capacity within our provider community to meet the diverse health needs of vulnerable populations, 2) engaging school districts and health systems to re-think “business as usual” to help ensure all children thrive, and 3) guiding common measurements and evaluation to ensure goals for Community Health Improvement Plans are met. Recently, Building Healthy Futures, in partnership with Children’s Hospital and Medical Center’s Ophthalmology Department and the University of Nebraska Medical Center Truhlsen Eye Institute, launched a new initiative, child vision care.
