Racial Equity Workshop Phase 1

REI’s two-day Phase 1 training is designed to develop the capacity of participants to better understand racism in its institutional and structural forms. Moving away from a focus on personal bigotry and bias, this workshop presents a historical, cultural, and structural analysis of racism in the United States. Participants will engage in discussion and personal reflection about their own experiences with race & racism.

Topics covered include a fish/lake/groundwater analysis of structural racism; understanding and controlling implicit bias; race, poverty, and place; markedness theory; institutional power arrangements and power brokers; importance of definitions of race and racism; history and legacy of race in American economic and policy development; racial identity and its interaction with institutional culture.

With shared language and a clearer understanding of how institutions and systems are producing unjust and inequitable outcomes, participants will leave the training better equipped to begin to work for change.

Note - due to registration demand for in-person REI sessions, we request that no more than 2 individuals per organization register. Additional individuals are invited to attend future sessions, dates can be found here

NAM is excited to partner with Best Care EAP to bring our members regular trainings.

A Head for Success: Cultivating a Growth Mindset

Do you believe that your genes dictate your intelligence and control creativity?  Or that these are traits that can be changed over time? This program draws on the latest findings in neuroscience to learn about how beliefs shape our mindsets to view situations differently. You will take a self-assessment to help determine if you lean in the direction of more of a “fixed mindset” or “growth mindset”, and understand the differences in these perspectives. We will then share strategies to cultivate a “growth mindset” through new ways of thinking which can instill in you a passion for learning, a readiness to embrace change and the courage to persist in the face of any challenge.

In this training you will:

  • Learn about the latest findings in neuroscience to effectively conduct a mindset self-assessment
  • Apply assessment results to instill a passion for learning
  • Develop your readiness to embrace change in order to rise above the challenges
  • Training is recommended for managers and employees

Everything you do as a nonprofit organization leads people back to your website. It is the center of your marketing universe and home base of your brand. Does your website effectively communicate your story or is it merely an online brochure with a few photos and mission statement? Today’s nonprofits need to be better storytellers than ever before as more and more stories are told all around us. In this session, we will share more than a decade of focus group research that reveals:

  • The 5 elements of an engaging website.
  • The one thing every nonprofit should be thinking about, but isn’t.

Session OneApril 4th 9:00 – 10:30 (CST)

Provides an overview of the mission and sustainability challenges facing Nebraska nonprofits in today’s environment and the emerging opportunities for integration and restructuring strategies to be considered as responsive and responsible solutions. What these solutions are (legally and practically), the terminology commonly used, and the myths and pros and cons of each option will be covered.

Session Two – April 25th 9:00 – 10:30 (CST)

Focuses on the nitty gritty of successfully pursuing and implementing restructuring strategies including but not limited to the process of identifying potential partners, negotiating and due diligence phases, the legal processes involved, and the challenges of operational integration

Session three – May 23rd 9:00 – 10:30 (CST)

Join us for a facilitated panel discussion with Nebraska nonprofits that have successfully engaged in restructuring solutions

Doug Sauer is a nonprofit expert who has helped thousands of nonprofits of all missions and circumstances with their capacity-building needs. Racial Equity Institute: Workshop Debrief April (Virtual) https://www.nonprofitam.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1826027 https://www.nonprofitam.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1826027
Join us for The Racial Equity Institute's Workshop Debrief

Please note - this is only for individuals who have previously attended a Phase 1 two day workshop.

Debriefing sessions are for people who have experienced Phase 1 training. Participants will review the concepts taught in Phase I and study them and their connection to each other more deeply. The lessons of each piece will be explored in relationship to REI’s analysis of structural racism.

The goal of the sessions is to connect all parts of the Phase I training to a common understanding and analysis of the problem of racism. It will include an analysis of the roots of racism and its contemporary manifestations. Participants will explore the meaning of each piece and its relevance to a vision for change. In more fully understanding the problem of racism, solutions present themselves, and people become more effective in their work. The challenge is to absorb the problem fully; specific diagnosis is more accurate, and specific interventions are more successful.

Participants will discuss one or more of the following:

  • How does the analysis explain our present circumstances?
  • How has racism remade itself in contemporary times?
  • Specifically, what does racism look like today?
  • Why is an organizing approach necessary to challenge or end racism?
  • What does an organizing approach look like?
  • What are the narratives of the dominant culture?
  • How do we understand the narratives better? What underpins them and inoculates generation after generation?
  • How would a new narrative address our organization’s/group’s work differently?
  • How do lake solutions begin and thrive in today’s world?

People with disabilities are disproportionately older, more rural, and more socio-economically disadvantaged. According to a 2022 report, there are 393,816 Disabled Iowans, 46.7% of whom receive food stamps and 30.4% of whom are 65 and older. 218,839 Nebraskans self-identified as Disabled in 2019, 79.8% of whom were 65 and older at the time of the study. The COVID-19 pandemic, considered by experts to be the largest ‘mass-disabiling’ event in human history, continues to contribute to the size of the Disabled population. Training focused on access for and inclusion of people with disabilities is invaluable to the success of Nonprofit Association of the Midlands’ membership, many of whose mission is direct support of these at-risk intersections. People with disabilities are volunteers, donors, consumers, and service recipients. Building capacity of midland nonprofits so that they can best serve people with disabilities isn’t just a matter of equity – it’s competitive advantage. Through the Disability 101 workshop, leaders will learn best practice in the language of disability, disability etiquette, and accessible event design.
