With winter nearly here, there is a chill in the air and the days have gotten shorter. For those with limited incomes, the stark reality of winter means making the difficult choice between food and warmth - with warmth being the usual sacrifice.
That is why the utilities serving the Omaha metro are once again joining together to ask for your participation and support in their annual Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth campaign.
Black Hills Energy, Metropolitan Utilities District and Omaha Public Power District have partnered with five agencies to provide energy assistance through the Heat the Streets fundraising campaign under the umbrella of the non-profit, Common Fund of the Heartland. As an added benefit, households that enroll in the program are also eligible to receive financial counseling services.
The funds raised through this campaign are managed and distributed to those who are elderly or disabled, or families who have fallen on hard times and need help getting back on their feet.
Register today for our 10th annual Heat the Streets Run and Walk for Warmth - Saturday, March 4!
What is it?
Heat the Streets Run is a professionally-timed 5K starting at Midtown Crossing and winding through the historic Midtown and Field Club neighborhoods. (View the 5K course map.)
Walk for Warmth is an untimed, one-mile walk around Midtown Crossing. (View the walk course map.)
For the first time this year, we're offering a 400-meter sprint! This quick event will be one time around the loop at Turner Park with a downhill finish!
Why do we do it?
Proceeds from the run and walk go to local energy assistance programs to help seniors, people with disabilities and low-income families pay their utility bills. The event is held in the cold winter months to bring attention to those who struggle to keep the lights on and heat their homes.
What are the details?
Race day check-in begins at 7 a.m. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. with the walk to follow at 9:15. The sprint will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Join us at 8:45 a.m. for a fun warm-up!
