Description
Background on Series: Have you worked your way up the organization and now have to do more with finance/accounting matters? Do you need to know enough to oversee those who are responsible for this area? Are you informed enough to ask the right questions and to be able to identify financial/accounting red flags?
Session Two: Functional Accounting
Functional expense accounting is one of the fundamental tools of internal management and external accountability reporting. It is a method of accounting based on the organization’s primary activities- a) program or mission-based services, b) general and administrative and c) fund raising. Sound functional expense practices produce information that managers, donors, clients, and other stakeholders use to gauge the relative effectiveness of the organization in fulfilling their mission. In this session we will review the basic principles of sound functional expense reporting including direct cost tracing and indirect expense allocation, and review the pertinent guidelines promulgated by accounting rule setting organizations. This session will also include exercises in functional expense allocation.
